The Captain and the Mouse

Years and years of TV history started on this day in 1955, when Captain Kangaroo premiered on CBS and The Mickey Mouse Club started on ABC.

Bob Keeshan, who came up with the concept for Captain Kangaroo and played the title character, also originated the role of Clarabell the Clown on The Howdy Doody Show when it aired on NBC. After the show ended its run, he turned his attention and fame toward advocating for children’s causes and fighting video game violence. For its part, Disney ultimately bought ABC.
