Feeling better about feeling older

My firstborn turned 18 over the weekend, and that’s enough to give anybody pause for a day or two. I’m past all of that now (it’s been the requisite couple of days), but it doesn’t change the fact that I’m starting to notice moments when random body parts simply don’t work as well as they once did.

Perhaps that’s why the tale of a temporarily older reporter and a 6-figure sports car brought a smile to my face.

In this video and story by LA Times columnist Dan Niel, Dan tells of Nissan’s efforts to help its young, lithe engineers design cars that fit an ever-aging populace. To do so, they created an “aging suit” to simulate the limited movement, blurred vision, and expanding stomach of an older driver.

Dan tries on the suit, and then puts it through the paces by test driving a car designed for stylish and wealthy kids with rich older parents: a $380,000 Lamborghini Murcielago.

To all of my older friends, enjoy the smile.

To all of my young and lithe friends, remember: your time will come (and your hair will go).
